It's All Good

So many good things have happened of late. Let me tell you about a few.


A very large Cub Scout Academic Fair, put on by 10 Stakes and Community Packs, was a huge success! I had been stressing and worrying about this for a lot of months. When show time came, I was so utterly relieved at the competence and ease with which the volunteers from our Stake carried out their responsibilities. I cannot say enough good things about these wonderful people. Our Stake's job was to man 7 stations where Cubscouts could learn about maps and compasses and earn belt loops and pins. Well, let me tell you - our Stake was fantastic! There were 420 little boys, age 7 through 10, that were present that day and I think our crew saw a majority of them!! They could pick which subjects they wanted to earn belt loops and pins in (there were 10 subjects offered) and we were busy the entire time - a constant stream of boys for 3 hours. The icing on the cake for our booth was the compass course. After they learned about compasses and maps, they were given a course to follow with their compass. The boys really had fun with that! It was a great day and I was grateful for the 8 wonderful people who gave of their time and talents to help so many little boys.





Another good thing is that Kendal's regular babysitter went out of town for a while. This gave me the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with my cutie pie! She is such a little doll!! Here's the documentation to prove it!










Intermingled with all the meetings, events, obligations, etc. came the opportunity to head out of the valley and the heat for a few short days. Since Dave got drawn for deer hunting in Kaibab, we headed up to the "lodge" to make sure his gun was going to hit the mark. I think it will do just fine, don't you? Dave is such a good marksman!









It was nice to spend a couple of days hanging out with my sisters (in-law, but that's just getting nit-picky!). Nobody had to run off to a meeting, a doctor's appointment, to babysit - we could just enjoy each other's company. (Well, that and watch Dancing with the Stars and Castle. Hey, it was premiere night - we all have our vices.) We don't do that enough, in my opinion. Enjoy each other's company - not the TV watching thing.


It has been a good month so far. More good things are still on the agenda!!

To Blog or Not to Blog...

...that is the question!



If I blog, I need to be consistent in posting. Grade: F



If I blog, I need to take my camera places and take pictures of things I do. Grade: F



If I blog, I need to put more of myself into it and be less of an event reporter. Grade: F.




So, once more I need to give myself the push to do this. It is the only journal I currently have of what's going on in our life. If that isn't enough reason to do it, I don't know what else would motivate me!




To that end, let me recap what's happened in the last month or so. A whole lot of Cub Scouting business has been done. Not only do I have one Thursday a month completely taken over by Scouting, but I have been visiting den and pack meetings, have been doing my Cub Roundtable Secretary duties, getting Scout leader training updated and preparing for a Cub Scout Academic Fair. Add to that two Saturdays at the Chandler High swimming pool for swimming merit badges and you can stick a fork in me - I am done! Ok, I'm not really. There's more to do.





Dave and I did find time to go camping up on the Mogollon Rim with the Yoshimines. The weather was perfect. It rained the first night we were there (pretty good rain, too), but then it was clear skies for the rest of the trip. It was nice to be in cool weather and to be too far away from home to worry about what needed to be done! We also saw some beautiful elk. You don't get to see them because I didn't take my camera with me on the ride.











We also made a trek up north to visit Jack, Karen and Teresa for their birthdays! Poor Stuart - a wife and two kids with birthdays three days in a row in August! We happened to be there on Karen's birthday. She requested birthday donuts! Jack doesn't care what the candle is in - just as long as he gets to help light them and blow them out!!




Then came Labor Day weekend. It is sad that as two retired folks we don't get excited about holidays! In fact, we forget about them. Charlotte and the kids were coming over for lunch and I was going to get Elmer's for us all. (If you have to ask what Elmer's is, you are a very deprived individual!) Well, guess what? They had the audacity to close just because it was Labor Day! We made do with Filiberto's - but it wasn't the same.


Today, Dave and I played in the kitchen all day. And by play I mean bake. And cook. Dave created a cinnamon walnut roll that was very good. I tried a new roll recipe that was pretty good. I should have it tweaked the way I like it in about 3 more batches! A peach pie was baked that was made from peaches from Dave's dad. Chocolate chip cookies made it into the lineup, too. We finished the day with a chicken casserole, salad and freshly baked rolls. We don't do this often, but when we do, we make a day of it! Sorry - no pictures. Was too busy to get the camera out!




We probably should have baked a cake today. It IS Jon's birthday. Guess we'll stick a candle in the pie or the cinnamon roll and sing to him. But we won't make him listen. We love him too much.








Looking back on the past weeks I have to say that the word I used to describe myself the other day does fit. In scripture class we had to use one word to describe ourselves to the person next to us. I said the first word that came to my mind - content. Using dictionary meanings I am "satisfied" with what I have, "not wanting more or anything else" and I have "peace of mind" and "emotional satisfaction." I do have peace of mind. I don't need or want anything other than what I have.
